As we know, in our current political atmosphere, the United Nations is not as widely known or understood as we would wish. By introducing the concept of the UN, peace-making, and cooperation among nations at an early age, we believe it will be possible to build on this foundation at higher academic levels, including through Model UN in high school or college. The ultimate aim is to build global citizenship and to maintain U.S. support for the United Nations and its work.
With a view to making this program accessible to anyone who wishes to use it, whether associated with UNA-USA or not, we have made a description and details of how to execute it available on our Chapter’s web site. While we are presenting it to third grades, it can be adapted to other levels as well.
As always, we invite members of UNA-USA or other interested individuals to join us in the classrooms. Each class is led by two volunteers, who need no special background except to enjoy interacting with kids on a timely topic. We find all our participating schools in Yonkers to have good academic standards. One of them, known as P.E.A.R.L.S., is the system’s flagship school, with students who have scored highest on placement exams.
Our volunteers often report how pleasantly surprised they are at the rich variety of topics displayed in the hallways and classrooms of the schools we visit.
Interested readers are encouraged to find out more by contacting the project coordinator, Karen El-Badry, at [email protected].
