UNA’s national partnership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has been very successful in Westchester County, especially in broader outreach to high school and middle school students in our area. The partnership, which was forged at the national level in 2014, has resulted in a number of joint activities with the AKA’s Zeta Nu Omega, Xi Chi Omega and Pi Iota Omega chapters in Westchester. We have worked together especially for the International Women’s Day and UN Day programs, but also with UN “mini-simulations” related to climate change. For that program we received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. I am indebted to my wonderful vice president and memberships chair, Dr. Brenda L. G. Smith, for her leadership in making our chapter one of the most active in that partnership.
I look forward to your support in our efforts to highlight the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights this year and student efforts to devise campaigns that support this important document as part of the Rock Your World program. The declaration was drafted by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, chair of the Commission on Human Rights, and long-term UNA-Westchester leader Margaret “Molly” Bruce, the UN staff member assigned to assist the Commission.
Finally, I wanted to thank everyone on our very special board of directors, all of whom have given their time and effort as volunteers to the UNA during my tenure. In particular, I want to acknowledge Marcia Wallace, who is stepping down after many years as a leader (currently of Membership and Nominations) and Scott Monje, who has kept the quality standard of our newsletter and records very high during his service as secretary. Other members of the board will continue as directors, and I value all of their contributions. This year we welcome four new members of the board: Vice President Jan Fischer, a long-term UN staff member; Treasurer Oneida Cabaleiro, a volunteer for many years; and Aicha Bargo, chair of the Young Professionals program. Christopher Swain has also joined the board and will help with fund-raising for our Adopt-A-Future program, which supports the Gambela Primary School at a refugee camp in Kenya, and other important campaigns. It has been an enriching experience for me, and I am very appreciative of the invaluable support of all the board members since 2011.
Best regards and peace,
Marcia Brewster
